How do I segment customers by value and fit?

Group your base so each segment gets the coverage, motion, and messaging it deserves.

Segment customers by value and fit by crossing how much an account is worth with how well it fits, then giving each quadrant a coverage model, motion, and message that matches, so your best accounts get your best effort and small accounts get an efficient touch. Segmentation decides how you serve, not just whether.

This guide covers the value-by-fit cut. For the overview of segmentation basics, see how do I segment my customers.

Why cross value with fit?

Value alone tells you size, and fit alone tells you match. Crossing them separates a large, perfect-fit account from a large but poor-fit one, and a small, high-fit account from a small, low-fit one. Each quadrant deserves a different plan.

High FitLow Fit
High valueInvest, named owner, Expand Revenue PlayServe efficiently, do not over-invest
Low valueNurture for growth, pooled coverageDigital only or exclude

What should each segment change?

Segments should change coverage, a named CSM versus a pooled team, motion, high-touch versus digital, and messaging. If two segments get identical treatment, they are one segment.

How does this connect to scoring?

Fit comes from your Fit Score, and value comes from revenue and potential. SignalRx writes both onto every account and contact in Salesforce, your system of record, so the segment and its Tags are assigned automatically and stay current as the score changes. What makes the scores dependable is that they combine external public context with your own internal signals, your revenue, support, and product-usage data tracked over time, with inference deciding which source to trust when they disagree, so the resulting scores and Tags become Revenue Plays and Salesforce lists your team acts on.

What does this look like on one account?

Illustrative, based on how SignalRx customers work. Beacon Primary Care Network is a hospital-affiliated group, 22 locations, specialty primary care, scored High Fit at 81 with a health tier of Expand and high account value. Value crossed with fit places it in the invest quadrant, so it gets a named owner, a high-touch motion, and an expansion Revenue Play, with Tags for ownership and NPPES specialty driving the right list membership.

Key takeaways

  • Cross value with fit to decide how to serve each account.
  • Every segment should change coverage, motion, or messaging.
  • Drive segments from the Fit Score and value so they stay current.
