How do I upsell customers outgrowing their plan?
Customers running above their plan become an expansion play with a cadence.
Flag accounts running above their plan and turn them into an expansion play. SignalRx brings product usage in alongside your revenue and plan data, compares them, and marks any account whose usage is above its allotment in Salesforce. A Revenue Play then hands the AE a task and an email cadence, so a happy, over-using customer hears from sales instead of just paying overage.

The problem
Some of your best expansion opportunities announce themselves in usage data: a customer sending far more messages than their plan includes, running more locations than they license, hitting an API quota every month. Finance sees it as overage revenue. Sales never sees it at all, because usage lives in a product database or a customer-success tool and the plan limits live in billing, and neither is in the CRM.
The customer, meanwhile, is paying the most expensive rate for the thing that is working best for them. That is a conversation an AE should be having, framed as good news.
What SignalRx changes
SignalRx brings product usage in alongside your revenue and plan data, compares them, and flags the account in Salesforce when usage is running above the plan. A Revenue Play turns that flag into an expansion play, and Salesforce puts the account in front of the AE with a task and an email cadence. No spreadsheet, no monthly export, no one reconciling plans to usage by hand. This is the SignalRx pattern: it tags the right data and scores every account and contact on external and internal signals, then turns those scores into Revenue Plays and lists inside Salesforce for action, with the edge coming from internal signals like revenue, support, and product usage over time plus inference across sources.
Example
A practice-management software company includes a monthly allotment of patient text messages in each plan tier, bills overage per message, and sells both a larger messaging package and an add-on AI assistant that handles the messaging automatically. The team wanted every customer running hot against their allotment to hear from their AE, with two doors: a better plan, or the assistant.
01 · Bring usage and plan data together
SignalRx takes monthly usage per account from your product or customer-success platform, and the plan allotments and any add-on packs from your billing or subscription data in Salesforce. Both are set up once. SignalRx keeps the monthly history so it can look at trends, not just last month.
02 · Check the numbers before trusting them
Before anything is built on it, SignalRx compares its usage numbers for a sample of accounts against what billing actually charged. In the example this mattered: it confirmed the right usage was being counted, showed that some accounts had bought add-on packs and so had a higher limit, and found a few accounts with no usage feed at all, which were treated as unknown rather than zero.
03 · Flag the accounts
Accounts whose average usage over the last three months is close to or above their plan's allotment get a Usage Above Plan flag. Unlimited plans are left out. The threshold and the window are set to your pricing. The flag updates daily and shows on the SignalRx Intelligence Card, so a rep opening any account sees it without running a report.
04 · Define the play
An expansion play on accounts. The criteria, in plain terms:
- A current customer with the Usage Above Plan flag.
- Has not already solved it by buying the add-on assistant or a larger message pack. Those accounts get different copy.
- No open expansion deal.
- No health warning signs. A struggling customer does not get a pricing conversation.
- Not enrolled in this play in the last six months, and not in the onboarding cross-sell play in the last 60 days.
The list is reviewed with sales and CS before it goes live.
05 · What happens in Salesforce
The day an account enters the play, Salesforce adds the decision-maker to the play's Campaign, creates a task for the AE with the account's plan tier and the fact that usage is above it, and starts the sequence in your sales tool.
The cadence is three emails over ten days in the AE's voice. The frame is congratulatory: high usage means the practice is growing. The emails never quote the customer's numbers or their overage rate; the AE brings those to the call. Two calls to action, both booking links tied to the Campaign.
06 · Two doors
Meeting outcomes are tracked two ways so the team learns which door customers choose: a plan upgrade, or the add-on assistant. After a quarter the data says whether this should be one play or two.
What the team sees and does
- The AE. Sees Usage Above Plan on the Intelligence Card, gets a task when the account enters the play, and has a warm, specific reason to call a happy customer.
- Customer success. Sees the flag and the play name and knows a pricing conversation is under way.
- Finance. Sees overage revenue convert into committed subscription revenue.
What to measure
- Audience size each month, and entries and exits.
- Sequence to booked-meeting rate.
- The split between plan upgrades and add-on deals.
- Expansion revenue credited to the play, and the drop in overage charges on enrolled accounts.
Variations SignalRx customers run
- Seats or locations above license. More locations or active users than the contract covers, corroborated externally via the customer's website or LinkedIn for a new location and job postings for new-site hiring.
- Feature adoption gap. Heavy use of one module and none of an adjacent paid module.
- Payments volume. For payments products, monthly volume growing past a threshold opens a tier conversation.
What SignalRx implements for you
- Bringing usage and plan data into SignalRx, with the check against billing.
- The flag and the Revenue Play, with the rules that keep plays apart.
- The Salesforce automation, Campaign, task, and sequence connection.
- The list review and a hand check of ten accounts against raw usage.
- A quarterly review of thresholds and the one-play-or-two decision.
Kickoff to first sequence: 4–6 weeks. Connecting the usage data takes most of that. Everything after it is a week.
